Grass Song by Norma Starszakowna

Grass Song is a batik by Norma Starszakowna. A very fine brush was used to paint the two tiny faces which are the focal point of the design. The diamond shape framing the two heads is delicately spotted and dappled with colour.

Some of the dark spots were spattered on with a dye-soaked brush. The dappled effect was produced by the bleaching action of soap powder sprinkled onto the wet silk. The surface was then covered with absorbent paper and ironed dry.
